Celebrating the Norwegian Constitution Day in Ålesund is like a small fairy tale, with parades through the city where marching bands and children traverse the cobblestone streets, and the national anthem echoes between the buildings. Idyllically situated in the heart of Ålesund lies Brosundet – a natural gathering point on the national day. We serve a champagne breakfast worthy of this festive day and have dressed up for the celebration. The restaurants Apotekergata No. 5 and Stuene are open with their à la carte menus, and at Sjøbua the day is celebrated with a magnificent Afternoon Sea. Inside, we light the fireplace as joyful gatherings come together for cocktails and mocktails at Arkivet Bar.
Norwegian Constitution Day (May 17th or "syttende mai") commemorates the signing of Norway's constitution in 1814. Unlike military-focused celebrations seen in many countries, Norway's national day centers on civilian celebrations and is beloved among children.
The highlight is the children's parade ("barnetoget"), where schoolchildren march with Norwegian flags and homemade school banners while marching bands play . Many people wear traditional folk costumes called "bunads" representing their regional heritage.
The day is filled with festive foods, games, and activities as Norwegians celebrate their democratic heritage with the cheerful greeting "Gratulerer med dagen!" (Congratulations on the day!).
