Hotel Brosundet is located in Ålesund, surrounded by spectacular nature and it is precisely this we wish to protect nature itself.
Sustainability and care for our local environment have always been central to the hotel’s operations. We believe it is important to preserve nature and the environment so that future generations can enjoy them just as we do today. To achieve this, we have implemented a number of measures aimed at reducing our environmental footprint.
Clean sea project
Our floating dock collects waste from the Brosundet
The Aquapod, developed by Clean Sea Solutions, absorbs all the waste that floats nearby. Even though it was a significant investment, the hotel never hesitated to order the floating dock from Clean Sea Solutions.
Reducing Food Waste
Every meal deserves a purpose
To reduce food waste, we have introduced smaller plates to help limit overconsumption at the buffet. We have also implemented a new lunch arrangement where leftovers from breakfast buffet are served to our staff. In addition, we take part in the Too Good To Go initiative, ensuring that surplus food and coffee are enjoyed rather than thrown away.
Inform about sorting waste
We invite our guests to take part in reaching our sustainability goals
In every room, guests will find clear information on how to sort their waste. We make it easy to separate materials so that waste is handled correctly and as much as possible can be recycled. This is an important step in reducing the hotel’s environmental footprint and promoting responsible resource use.
Reducing Energy Consumption
By using less, we take better care of our resources and reduce our environmental impact
To reduce energy consumption, we have chosen solutions that make our guest rooms more efficient. You won’t find refrigerators in the rooms – a conscious choice to save energy and lessen our environmental impact. Cold drinks and storage are, of course, available upon request.
Our suppliers
Strong supplier compliance management is a part of our ethical and responsible supply chain
We believe that sustainability is not only about how we operate the hotel, but also about the partners we choose to work with. That is why we set clear requirements for our suppliers regarding ethical practices and sustainable production. At the same time, we aim to support local businesses by sourcing locally whenever possible. In doing so, we help strengthen a more responsible and locally rooted value chain.
Reducing Microplastics
We do everything we can to eliminate the use of microplastics
Microplastics are tiny particles that remain in nature and never fully disappear. They are harmful to humans, animals, and ecosystems. To address this, we have phased out products that may contain microplastics and replaced them with better alternatives – such as natural, plant-based, or biodegradable products and packaging.
We are proud to be Nordic Swan Ecolabel certified. This certification confirms that we operate with clear environmental standards, while comfort and quality remain central to your stays. You will experience the same level of hospitality, while we continue to make responsible choices in our daily operations. The Nordic Swan Ecolabel is the official environmental certification of the Nordic region, recognised for its clear criteria and regular evaluations. To be certified, we must meet strict requirements for energy use, water consumption, waste management, chemical reduction, and responsible sourcing. For us, this is continuous work — a commitment to caring for nature while taking good care of our guest experience. You can find more information through the Nordic Swan Ecolabel's website below to explore how the certification is assessed and maintained.
One of our most visible environmental initiatives is the pier by Sundet Gym and Bath, specially designed to collect waste floating in the Brosundet. We are deeply committed to caring for our local environment, and plastic pollution in the ocean is a global challenge. From our location, we see the problem firsthand, which is why it’s important for us to take action and help reduce marine waste. The floating dock was installed in 2022, and if you ask whether it makes a difference, the answer is clear: Yes! We empty it several times a week and can see the positive results with our own eyes.
